The Gateway To The Glens
Kirriemuir is a bustling warm red sandstone town nestled at the entrance to Glen Clova and Glen Prosen hence its name ’the gateway to the glens’. It is a town of winding lanes and cobbled streets that has lost none of its charm or character.
Kirriemuir is the birthplace of J M Barrie author of Peter Pan. Barrie was one of 10 children born to a hand weaver and his parental home, which has been restored is now a fascinating museum looked after by the National Trust. A statue of Peter Pan sits in the town square near to another interesting museum called the Gateway to the Glens. Barrie gifted the town with a Camera Obscura which is still in working order and provides a panoramic view of the little town and the surrounding area
Kirriemuir also boasts an Arts and Crafts centre in Cumberland Close which is probably unique in Scotland. This is home to glass engraver and sculptor Bruce Walker, Goldsmith Gordon Ewen and to the Tower Gallery.
Nearby places to visit include the Glens with their magical scenery and Glamis Castle, birthplace of the Queen Mother, which is 5 miles away.
